Electric trolling motors are are becoming more popular these days onboard many fishing boats. Boaters are finding out about the numerous benefits electric motors have to offer, the most obvious being the fact they are quiet when operating and that they are environmentally friendly. An added benefit is that their popularity is not hurt by the increase of the price of gas. These motors, however, do need care that differs from the average gasoline powered motors.

Electric motors work in a different way to gas motors, so it should not be any surprise that they need different care. Electric motors make use of batteries to supply them with power. This means they have a completely different way of powering up.

Any fisherman who has purchased or is considering the purchase of an electric trolling motor would be wise to carefully read the following list of tips.

- Charging replaces filling with fuel. It is a simple procedure to pour in a little gas to get the motor operating, but electric motors do not work that way. Electric motors must be charged. They need a battery charger.

This can be an onboard charger or one that is kept on shore: this is up to the individual fisherman. The batteries are made such that they can be run down and charged many times so there should be no issues about damaging them. However, the manufacturers directions must still be acknowledged with care to make sure that the motor batteries are not damaged.

- Always inspect the motor before use. Stray fishing lines can very easily become tangled in the motor and cause serious damage. It only takes a split second for the damage to occur, but it also only takes a few minutes to inspect the engine to prevent that from occurring.

- Perform regular maintenance. An electric motor needs checks and routine maintenance just like any other type of motor. Parts should be inspected to ensure they are secure and in good condition. Fisherman should not form the opinion that electric equates with no worries. Maintenance still must be undertaken.

- The motor should at all times be monitored when charging. This prevents it from being turned on accidentally. A motor that is allowed to run can easily overheat and burn out.

- Take care of the motor. Electric motors contain parts that are kept cool by being submerged under water, so it is important that the fisherman does not run the motor whilst it is out of the water. It is also important to keep general care in mind by not using the motor in weeds or mud.

These tips offer ways to protect and extend the life of the electric trolling motor. Fisherman who are using an electric motor can expect great benefits when they follow these tips together with any instructions offered by the manufacturer.
