When to go fishing

Anytime that you can get out on the water safely minus lightning storms and hurricanes is the best time go fishing. However, as you gain experience, you’ll see that some times are more likely to be productive than others. Here are some tips to increase your catch. The time of day is important. Freshwater fish are usually active at dawn and dusk. Don’t expect to catch fish any time of day unless you know where to find them and you’re patient.

Consider the lunar cycle. The phases of the moon also play a role in how aggressive fish are and how they congregate, especially around spawning time. The Solunar Theory may provide some insights into peak fishing periods but remember that local variables may play an even more important role.

Observe weather patterns. Many species of fish tend to be active just before a front passes through and then disappear with the sudden barometric changes associated with the storm front. If the front lasts for a long period, wait until it passes for better fishing conditions.

Know spawning cycles. Each fish species is prone to spawn at a certain times of year. This is programmed into their genes but much of it is triggered by water temperature, the lunar phase and the food they eat.

Keep abreast of events. Some states have their own free fishing weekend. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commissions, for instance, sponsor numerous events to encourage parents and other responsible adults to teach their children to fish.

And if you’re looking for a place to camp, there’s only one place to be if you live in Ohio. For a fun-filled and unforgettable camping experience, be sure to visit Ohio Campsites.
