How to Start Your Own Cheap Nintendo DS Collection
Do you think sales of the Nintendo Wii, Playstation, and Xbox have been enormous? Believe it or not but the Nintendo DS and Nintendo DS Lite may win the prize for the most sought-after video game console during the past couple years. Even though these video game consoles are pint-sized, their sales have been nothing short of gigantic.
According to the NPD Group which performs marketing research for a wide range of industries, 3.0 million Nintendo DS Lites were sold in the United States during the month of December 2008 . This breaks the record for the most units sold by a video game manufacturer in one month. Sony held the previous record in which 2.7 million Playstation 2 units were sold during the month of December 2002.
One of the things that makes the Nintendo DS so popular is its portability and the fact that you can purchase the console in twelve different colors. Because of the assorted varieties available some people have started collecting the units. Either they like having a selection to choose from or they think that some day the units will become even more valuable then they are now.
How much would your old Atari be worth if you still had one today? I bet you could sell one on Ebay for a nice chunk of change. Who knows how much a Nintendo DS in prime condition will be worth 30 years from now?
You can also find a bunch of different consoles that are no longer available for sale. One such unit that is probably hard to find is the Pirates of the Carribean console which was produced to help advertise the movie when it first came out. Other units were produced to help advertise sales of video games which were developed for the Nintendo DS including Donkey Kong vs. Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Final Fantasy.
Certain consoles were also produced to raise money for charity like the Nintendo DS Lite Pink Ribbon special edition console. Every time a unit a sold Nintendo donates a certain percentage of the proceeds to the Susan G. Komen foundation which raises money for breast cancer research.
One of my favorite special edition Nintendo DS Lite consoles is the Red Mario. This DS Lite console is bright red and features a white cartoon ‘M’ on the front cover which stands for Mario. This console comes bundled with the New Super Mario Brothers Nintendo DS video game which is based on the original Super Mario Brothers game that was so popular when Nintendo released the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985.
Some Nintendo DS Lite consoles will be easier to find than others such as the Pink Ribbon and Ice Blue unit that comes with Brain Age. You’ll probably have to search high and low for other units such as Pirates of the Caribbean and the Legend of Zelda. Some Zelda units are gold and others are silver. The silver consoles were sold in the United Kingdom and only 1000 of the gold units were produced for sale in the United States. I would definitely snatch up any Nintendo DS console you come across while visiting garage sales and thrift stores.
